2 ième PRIX À L'EXPOSITION DE L'ATELIER D'AQUARELLE LE PARTAGE

"La pivoine de Louise", aquarelle 15 po X 22 po

WOW, mon aquarelle "La pivoine de Louise" a remporté le 2 ième prix de l'exposition annuelle de l'Atelier d'Aquarelle le Partage qui a eu lieu au Pavillon du Bois Papineau à Laval, du 12 au 15 avril dernier. Je suis vraiment touchée par cette reconnaissance du milieu, surtout que le niveau des artistes de l'atelier est très élevé. Il y avait beaucoup de magnifiques tableaux, c'est certain que pour les juges, la tâche n'a pas dû être facile.

Wow, i am so happy and proud, my favorite watercolor " La pivoine de Louise" won the second prize at the "Atelier d'Aquarelle Le Partage" annual exhibition. I'm so touched by this recognition from the artistic world. I have to say that the level was very high, there were many beautiful watercolors and i presume it was a hard job for the judge to choose three winners.

Meredith ou comment utiliser un vieux canevas. Meredith or how to use an old canvas!

Voici un tableau que j'ai peint à l'acrylique sur toile.  Il s'agissait tout d'abord d'un projet que je devais réaliser à l'aquarelle. J'avais pour commencer enduit ma toile d'un gesso absorbant spécialement conçu pour peindre à l'aquarelle sur toile.  Ce gesso est particulièrement absorbant permettant de travailler à la façon aquarelle, c'est à-dire peindre mouillé sur mouillé.
N'étant pas particulièrement fière du résultat et après avoir peint et repeint la surface de la toile, j'avais mis celle-çi de côté en me disant que je la retoucherai un de ces jours plus favorables.
Une journée où je m'amusais à regarder les portraits réalisés par les artistes membres du groupe "Julia Kay's Portrait Party" il me vint à l'idée de me servir de ce fond d'aquarelle pour réaliser un portrait d'une des membres, "Meredith", mais au lieu de le faire à l'aquarelle de le peindre à l'acrylique. Ce medium permet de reprendre les erreurs et de corriger le tir contrairement à l'aquarelle qui ne permet pas cette liberté.
Alors tout ce qui est en rose-orangé est le fond aquarelle et toutes les autres couleurs sont en acrylique.

This is an acrylic portrait i did on canvas. First of all, it was supposed to be a watercolor project. I had coated the canvas with a special absorbant gesso for painting watercolor on canvas. You can work wet in wet easily, but i was not satisfied by the result, then i put the canvas on the side waiting for a better time to work on it.
One day i was looking for some funny portrait did by artist from Julia Kay's portrait party, i had an idea to use this colored canvas and work on it with acrylic. I was easier to correct errors and have more liberty to paint.
Everything you can see in pink-orange is the waterbase, and all the others colors are acrylic.

Il parait que mes trois filles ont hérité de mon petit côté artistique.  Comme Obélix, elles sont tombées dedans dès leur plus jeune âge. L'aînée est particulièrement douée pour le design d'objet. Elle a terminée avec succès ses études en design de l'environnement, spécialisation en design d'objet. Aujourd'hui, elle travaille pour une boîte de design d'intérieur de Montréal.

Could you imagine, my three daughters inherited my artistic talent!!! As the french cartoon Obélix, they fell in the magic potion when they were very young! The older is particulary gifted for packaging design.  You could see on the pic below one of her project. Ô Sirop,  redesign proposal for Maple Syrup packaging, elevating its form from dull tin cans and plastic containers. I like the idea of getting a spill-free ceramic container with the purchase. What do you think about it?

How do you make it look so real?

1.:First transparent glaze on the background. Masking fluid on the little girl and the bucket.

2. Remove masking fluid, light wash ont the bathing suit and hair.

3. Several washes on the skin and rocks behind.

On me demande souvent, comment j'arrive à peindre un tel réalisme. Ma réponse est simple: la patience! C'est mon plus grand outil et ma plus grande vertu.
Parfois il m'arrive d'envier certains artistes qui peuvent peindre un tableau en quelques heures. Si je tente de peindre vite et de façon plus spontanée, le résultat me semble souvent inachevé.
Un jour un ami m'a dit "Cesse de lutter, c'est ta façon de peindre"! Alors maintenant j'assume!
Cette façon de peindre est souvent un processus très laborieux, mais le résultat est ma récompense, mes efforts en ont valu la peine!
A question i'm asked often is, "How do you make it look so real? The answer is patience!  It's my greatest tool and virtue!!!
I used to envy other artists who could complete a painting in a few hours. If i try to paint faster and looser, the result always looked unfinished to me. One day, a friend said: "Quit fighting it, it's how you paint!". So i did, happily.
This style of painting is often a labor-intensive process, but the result will be my just reward, and well worth my time and effort!

  Another sketch for the portrait group created by Julia Kay. First of all, i drew a simple sketch with a technical pen on a white paper. After this first step, i scanned it to work on the computer. I made three different tries: one with photoshop in a cartoon style, the second with photoshop too but i added the watercolor effect . The third trie is different, because i worked with  Corel paint essential ,

Les dessins à partir de photos fournies par les membres flickers se succèdent. Le plus récent provient d'une photo du membre surnommé Pepefarres.  J'ai tout d'abord fait un léger croquis à mine dans mon carnet de croquis, puis ensuite travailler l'ensemble à la plume technique. Après quoi, j'ai scanné le dessin pour le travailler en couleur sur le programme photoshop.
My recent sketch for the Julia Kay's portrait party  was  made from a flickr member picture: Pepefarres. First, i did a light sketch with a pencil, and work the whole portrait with a technical pen. Then i scanned the final sketch and work on it with color on photoshop.

Julia Kay' Portrait Party Group

 J'ai récemment été accepté au sein du groupe de portrait créée par Julia Kay, le fameux Julia Kay Portrait Party Group que l'on peut retrouver sur Flickr. Il suffit d'avoir déjà un compte sur flickr et de faire la demande à l'initiatrice du groupe. Julia étudie la demande et accepte ou non la personne intéressée. Il faut accepter les règles du jeu, tel fournir des photos de soi et accepter que les autres membres les interprètent à leur façon, donc ne pas être succeptible! On ne doit pas faire son autoportrait, mais plutôt le portrait des autres membres. Tous les médiums sont acceptés: le crayon, l'encre, l'aquarelle, l'acrylique, l'huile, la tablette graphique, etc.
Des heures et des heures de plaisirs, car les membres étant nombreux, une photo s'ajoute à toutes les minutes ou presque. Cette formule permet de pratiquer le portrait et aussi de découvrir des artistes vraiment doués.

Recently, i was invited to join a very specific group: the Julia Kay's Portrait Party group! This group is only for non-photographic portraits of other members of the group. It is not for self-portraits or portraits of people not in the group or other kinds of artwork.
Also, around the same time you post your first portraits, you should start a discussion thread with some photos of yourself for other artists to work from. If you are not comfortable posting photos of yourself, you shouldn't join the group.
You should be open to different interpretations of your photos . Not all of the artists work in a realistic style - some portraits are more abstract or conceptual. If failing to see a resemblance, or looking ugly, alien, or the wrong gender will make you uncomfortable, you shouldn't participate.
 This group welcomes experimentation and playing with styles or media that are unfamiliar to you. If you usually make pencil drawings, feel free to try some color! If you usually make realistic drawings, feel free to try something more abstract! Consider this a safe place to have fun while making portraits of the other members.

LES LAURENTIDES: RÉGION INSPIRANTE

Sur la route de St-Sauveur, aquarelle

Au nord de Montréal, dans cette région qu'on appelle les Laurentides, de nombreux endroits inspirants pour peindre ou dessiner s'offrent à nous. On y trouve de tout: de jolies maisons centenaires aux couleurs criantes, aux granges délabrées prêtes à s'effondrer, les charmants chemins de terres qui relient les nombreux villages, en contournants les centaines de lacs, petits comme gros. Le relief montagneux qui donne du fil à retordre aux agriculteurs, abonde d'une faune et une flore sauvage. Bref, ce ne sont pas les sujets qui manquent.

In the Laurentians, one hour north Montreal, were many inspiring sites to paint or draw. We can find everything: charming old houses with gorgeous colors, old barns ready to collapse, beautiful road link many villages,  Which by-passes hundreds of lakes, small and big. The mountain relief offers a wild fauna and flora. In brief, we don't miss subjects.

Illustrations pour une naissance et un mariage!

Dernièrement, j'avais deux évènements très spéciaux à souligner. Il y avait tout d'abord le mariage de mon cousin Sean Fitzgerald avec sa dulcinée Kelsey  Mayabb qui a eu lieu à Austin, Texas. Malheureusement, je ne pouvais y assister.  Dommage car je suis certaine que ce fut une journée extraordinaire.  Et puis il y a eu aussi la naissance de Kara, premier enfant de mon autre cousin ( frère de l'autre) Eric et d'Erika Rieker son épouse, qui demeurent eux aussi à Austin.  Alors j'ai eu l'idée de faire des cartes spécialement pour chaque occasion, question de personnaliser les souhaits!
This month, i had two different events to emphasize. First, there was Sean and Kelsey's wedding  and secondo, Eric and Erika's new born dauthter Kara. Sean and Eric are brother and also my cousins. They both live in Austin, Texas, and unfortunatly i could not go to the wedding, so i decided to make them a home made congratulation card

Histoire de courges!

J'ai expérimenté un papier d'aquarelle avec lequel je ne suis pas vraiment habituée: le Montval watercolor fait par Canson.  Il est plutôt mince environ 90lb, une surface plutôt lisse.  Le pigment se fixe seulement en surface et peut donc être déplacé facilement. Il me faut alors travailler autrement avec ce nouveau défi. 
I try a new watercolor paper for the first time: Montval watercolor by Canson.  It's a thin paper about 90pounds with a smooth surface.  The pigment stay only on top of it and it's really easy to move it, so i have to change my way to paint.

Il suffit de faire tremper la feuille de papier dans un bassin d'eau pendant plus de 10 minutes, puis on la retire sans l'essorer, puis on dépose le pigment à peine dilué, quand le papier perd de son aspect brillant, on peut alors faire des rehauts avec un pinceau chargé d'un mince filet d'eau qui repoussera le pigment créant un blanc. Utilisez un traînard.
Just let the paper in a bassin approximatively 10 minutes, and then pull out without wipe it, and just paint with fresh pigment. When the paper lost is shinning aspect, you can paint with a little bit of water to make highlights, for this just use a digger brush.

Papier St-Armand

J'ai récemment acheté une tablette de papier aquarelle fait main par la papeterie St-Armand, situé à Montréal. Les papiers Saint-Armand fait main sont fabriqués une feuille à la fois, selon les méthodes traditionnelles.Ils ont des bords à la forme (bords frangés) sur les quatre côtés. Il n’y a pas de direction dans le grain. Ces papiers sont utilisés par les artistes pour l’aquarelle, le pastel, l’acrylique et la gravure.
 Recently, i bought this watercolor paper pad at the local art store. This paper is made in Montreal at the paper mill  St-Armand. It's a handmade paper. The Saint-Armand handmade papers are made one sheet at a time following traditional methods. The sheets have 4 deckled edges and no grain direction.
The Saint-Armand handmades are used by artists for watercolour, pastel, acrylic paint, and printmaking.  For more information go on: http://www.st-armand.com

Ce fut une expérience plutôt amusante, car étant habituée à peindre avec du papier Arches ou Winsor &Newton, j'ai dû adapté ma façon de peindre avec ce nouveau papier.  Il ne permet pas l'erreur, aucune correction possible, aucun retour à l'arrière non plus!  Alors on se lance et on expérimente dans l'attente d'un résultat positif! En voici le résultat.
Second attempt, i have to adjust my way to paint on this new w.c. paper, it's totally different than Arches or Winsor & Newton paper. No mistake possible, can't repair or go back. Just try and see...what is going to happened.
